I’m going to try and teach you how to correctly set up an environment to play scary games in. There is a key reason as to why this is important, if you don’t set up your environment then scary games become…tame. So I will let you guys know of some great tips to get the most out of your scary game experience.

Step 1: The first thing that you should do is turn off all lights in the room, besides your monitor. This first major step provides the feeling of you being watched, this makes you a paranoid person and it gives the scares a much better result.

Step 2: Get yourself either a headset or headphones, I would highly recommend a headset but it’s your decision. When setting up your environment wearing a headset makes the games sound real. When you’re walking around a foreign environment in the game and you hear a door open behind you, you just want to either one not look behind you in-game, or two you look behind yourself in real life. When you don’t use headphones, scary games don’t have surround sound anymore, this is because the sound echoes through the room and not through your head.

Step 3: Make sure that you are the only person in the room, this is very important. If you did the previous two steps and have a friend in the room, when you start playing two things will happen, one is that you as a player will feel the other person staring at you, and two if they start talking to you then that atmosphere you built up has been torn down.

Step 4: I would also highly suggest that you don’t look at the game beforehand if you want to play it. If you watch someone play it then why should you play it? By doing that you spoiled the scares for yourself so if you go in and play it you wouldn’t be that surprised and you wouldn’t really be that scared, you would see the monster and react like oh shoot I should go or something of that sort. There are two things I would do to give myself any information on the game. One would be steam ratings, look to see how many good reviews it has. The second one would be to read up on the game synopsis. Its one thing to go into a good game blind, it’s another thing to buy a game that you thought would be cool to play blind but the game actually turned out to be bad. Bad scary games immediately ruin the atmosphere so steer clear of them. Always look at the reviews and synopsis, never look at the gameplay pictures and videos.

This has been my advice and tips on how to make a scary environment, for a quick overview; You should turn off the lights, put on a headset or headphones, kick everyone out of your room but you, go in to the game blind for added effect and make sure the game that your playing is good.
