Darkwood Game Review

Acid Wizard Studio released Darkwood on August 18th, 2017. I had no expectations going into this game, last week on Steam I saw this game on sale for 50% so I said screw it I’ll try out this scary game. Darkwood was 100%, not the game I was expecting to play when I heard the name Darkwood my first thought was a first-person horror that takes place in a forest but I was very glad to be very wrong.

Darkwood’s mechanics, in Darkwood you play as I believe some sort of government agent but I could be wrong, I don’t have too much info on the main character. This game is a top-down survival horror game, you don’t hear that often. Your character has limited sightlines and from what I played there’s a day and night cycle. You have a house that protects you during the night but it shouldn’t be a thing that you bank on. You can barricade doors and windows in your house to prevent anything from getting in, if something does get in you must eliminate it before it kills you. If it’s night time and you’re in a dark part of your house, bad things will happen to you.

During the first day that I played they provided at least 4 different warning telling you that the night in this game is very very dangerous, during the day you must venture into the woods to gather resources with your limited inventory after you do that you must return to the house for the night.

During the first night that I played I barricaded all the Windows in the room that I chose, I stayed very close to my lights and even with those defences the door to the room opened in the middle of the night, nothing came in but it still is nerve racking that you can’t move or else whatever is behind that door could kill you.

How I feel about this game, this is to me one of the most original concepts that I’ve ever gotten the chance to play. This game is a wonderful piece of art, this game was handled with so much care, it seems so daunting for new players and it gives a great challenge for people used to the top-down genre. From what I played this is one of the most balanced games on the scale of difficulty vs skill, I could play this game for hours but what doesn’t get old is the night sequences, I only got to play one but it seems like anything could happen to you. I don’t really have any complaints, I will rate this game a 10/10 I am recommending this game to anyone who wants to play an amazing strategy horror game.
