Frictional Games released SOMA on September 22nd, 2015. This is the same studio that brought you Amnesia the Dark Descent in 2010. The only thing that I knew when I went into this game was that the reviews on this game are fantastic and that this was the same studio as Amnesia.
SOMA’s mechanics, this game from what I played is a first-person survival horror. You are a patient with a brain condition, you go to a doctor to fix it but when you get there you get tested and then wake up in some facility. You are trying to figure out where you are and what happened in this facility without getting killed in the process. All I know from playing this game is that it really reminds me of Alien Isolation but in a good way. You are wandering throughout this facility avoiding the monster at any cost while trying to get out yourself. It’s the same as far as controls as amnesia but without the lantern and tinderboxes.
This game when I played it was legitimately terrifying, it has the creepy atmosphere, fear of the unknown, and a brilliant soundtrack. When you wake up in the facility you have zero clue as to what is going on and not too much to go off of. Walking around this environment gives me the chills and the scares in this game like oh my god. In my personal opinion SOMA doesn’t beat out Darkwood but SOMA is a very interesting horror game that gives a very colorful fell when playing it, I highly recommend this to any horror junkie or to anyone who wants a good scare. I am going to rate SOMA a 10/10 because of the crazy atmosphere, the fantastic sound, and the intriguing backstory of this character and this facility as a whole.
