1916 – Der Unbekannte Krieg Game Review

1916 – Der Unbekannte Krieg is an interesting take on the genre that I wasn’t expecting. I don’t want to spoil the game with too many details just in case you want to play it. 1916 is obviously a game based in the time period of 1916, the premise of this game from what I played is that it’s World War 1 and you (a soldier) is navigating a series of trenches while avoiding the enemy.

The player doesn’t start with a weapon and is forced to avoid all contact with any enemy they encounter. Your goal in this game is to find a gas mask and escape the trenches. But it’s not as simple as you think, the enemy is constantly searching for you and once they find you; you will have to shake them off your trail. This game is honestly terrifying for its graphics and how well the chase mechanic is executed.

Now it’s time to explain how my experience playing this game went. You’ll find a link here to my playthrough of the game (I didn’t finish it.) From my personal experience I found this game to be scary “sometimes” but once I figured out the game mechanics it became a null kind of feeling when getting caught. When I got caught the first time I freaked out because I didn’t know the trenches that well so I was frantically running hoping to find a hiding place. It doesn’t give you that much direction as to where to go or what to do, but that’s actually pretty good for a horror game. I never felt like the game was unfair, I just felt that it was a little slow in it’s pacing. My final thoughts on this game; I feel that you can live without this game, if you really want it then there’s a download link that will be here. It does a great job at creating an atmosphere that felt scary, but it loses that magic after you learn the game a little bit. My overall score for this game is a 6/10 because of the reasons that I listed above.
